The Cornerstone Café gives youth in residence at Onarga Academy vocational training in business operations, coffee drinks, and gift and bakery sales.
Café employees gain a variety of real-world employment skills like filling out an application, interviewing, and training to run an imported Italian espresso machine, serve customers, and make a variety of coffees, iced drinks, and smoothies. During the summer, the Café features Grillworks Thursday, serving grilled brats and hotdogs to the lunch crowd.
Through an affiliation with the Spence Farm Foundation's Harvest Feast fund raiser, boys from the Café have also had the opportunity to assist as sous chefs and servers, giving them on-the-job training for employment after they leave Onarga Academy.
Additionally, boys in Onarga Academy’s vocational education program helped renovate the café’s Upper Room meeting area, putting their woodworking and handyman skills into practice. The Upper Room provides meeting, gathering, and event space for area residents.
The Cornerstone Café plans to expand in the next year to a full kitchen, serving sandwiches, soups, and salads.
